Call for Special Issue Papers

The European Journal of Personality (EJP) is seeking paper proposals for the 2024/25 Special Issue on “Honesty: conceptualization, assessment, prediction, and processes”, edited by Giulio Costantini, Karolina Aleksandra Scigala, and Isabel Thielmann, and invites you to submit a proposal for an empirical, methodological, or conceptual/theoretical paper that addresses this topic.

This EJP issue aims at providing a substantial contribution to understanding honesty from a personality psychological perspective. Here is a (non-exhaustive) list of topics of interest:

-        Conceptualization and structure of honesty. In the last two decades, honesty has become more prominent in personality psychology through its inclusion in models of basic personality structure, particularly the HEXACO model. However, the nature of honesty as a trait, a value, a virtue, or a collection of related behaviors, as well as the reasons underlying the coalescence of honesty with traits such as humility and modesty, are still objects of discussion. We welcome research fostering conceptual clarity regarding the nature of honesty and its structure.

-        Assessment of honesty. Assessing honesty can pose specific challenges, particularly in situations perceived as involving high stakes. These challenges are connected, for example, to the liar paradox, potential influences of social desirability, and the fact that behavioral measures of honesty often involve deception. The special issue welcomes contributions testing the validity of extant honesty measures and proposing novel strategies for assessing honesty (e.g., as a trait, state, value, virtue, or behavior).

-        Prediction of honest behavior. The special issue welcomes research studies proposing novel and creative strategies for improving the prediction of honest and dishonest behavior through personality.

-        Processes involved in honesty. The reasons why some individuals behave honestly or dishonestly in certain situations are not yet fully understood. The special issue welcomes research investigating processes and dynamics by which individual differences in honesty translate into behavior and relevant life outcomes, as well as contributions investigating processes (e.g., affective, behavioral, cognitive, motivational, genetic, environmental) underlying those individual differences.

How to submit

Contributions to this special issue will be considered based on proposals sent to the guest editors of this special issue. While all proposals will be internally reviewed and receive constructive feedback, full articles will be invited only for those proposals that fit well with the theme of the special issue and can make a strong contribution to the field. The invitation of a full article will be conditional upon considering the feedback from the editorial team. Full articles will go through an initial editorial screening, after which they will undergo a regular review process. All manuscripts should be prepared in line with EJP’s author guidelines, transparency and open science standards (for more information, see https://journals.sagepub.com/author-instructions/ERP). As to article formats, the special issue will consider empirical papers, non-empirical papers, and registered reports.

Proposals should be no longer than 3 pages (including references) and include:

  • List of authors, affiliations, and email addresses.

  • Description of the type of contribution (e.g., theoretical, methodological, empirical).

  • Outline of the content of the planned contribution (e.g., the purpose, rationale, methodology and expected results of the proposed study – as appropriate).

  • The relevance of the planned contribution.
